MACHU PICCHU

History

Machu Picchu is a massive complex thought to have been built for an Inca emperor called Pachacuti. While it is often referred to as "The Lost City of Incas," it is not so. The ruins are in fact an extremely large royal estate. The Incas deserted Machu Picchu after a century later, during the Spanish Conquest. It remained undiscovered to the Spanish but was finally found in 1911, by American historian Hiram Bingham. Over the years around 30% of the structure has been restored, to give tourists a better understanding of how the estate would have looked like.
